In this guide
Begin with what you want to power
List the equipment you want to use, where you use it and whether several items may run together. Garden tools, permanent equipment and a future garden building can raise different planning questions.
Include model details where available. Do not assume that one new socket covers every future appliance or that a proposal for garden tools also includes specialist equipment.
Describe the position and surroundings
Take a wide photograph showing the area and a closer view of the proposed position. Mention doors, walkways, outdoor taps, exposure and landscaping plans. These are details for professional assessment, not a checklist establishing a location is safe.
Consider convenience too: will furniture obstruct access, and is the position close to where you use equipment? Discuss the final location before buying products.
Explain existing power and access
Mention nearby sockets or outdoor supplies, but do not remove covers to gather information. Photos of visible equipment and the wider layout are enough to start the conversation.
Describe finished paving, decking, planted areas, access restrictions and the approximate distance to the location. Routing and installation requirements need site-specific assessment; this guide does not provide wiring instructions.
What can affect the quotation?
- Whether this is a new installation or a replacement.
- Suitability of the existing supply and any additional work identified.
- The location, access and cable-route requirements.
- Equipment and materials included in the scope.
- Work around existing finishes and who handles making-good.
See our outside-socket service and current guide prices for an initial starting point. A guide price is not a final quotation for every property.
Use outdoor equipment appropriately
Electrical Safety First highlights suitable outdoor equipment, RCD protection when using garden tools and care with cables. Its guidance is linked below.
An outside socket does not make every connected appliance or lead suitable for outdoor use. Ask about your intended equipment and follow its instructions rather than treating a planning article as approval of a setup.
Send a clear brief
Include your postcode, planned equipment, proposed location, photos and access notes. If lighting is also planned, mention it so the work can be considered together.
View our outside-socket example, contact Mark or read our garden-lighting guide to prepare a combined brief.
