Start with your electricity rate
A 2 kW heater running continuously for one hour uses 2 kWh. At an example rate of 25p per kWh, that costs 50p. Two hours a day would cost £1 a day, or £30 over 30 days. This is an illustration, not a current tariff quote.
Why actual use can differ
A thermostat may switch the heating element on and off after the room reaches its target temperature. The maximum rating therefore does not always represent continuous consumption. Room temperature, insulation and settings affect actual use. For a better estimate, use measured energy consumption where available.
Compare costs fairly
Compare the same operating time and tariff. A lower-powered heater running longer can use the same total energy as a higher-powered one running for less time. This calculator estimates electricity costs; it does not predict the heat needed for a particular room.
Try your own figures
Select the portable-heater preset in our calculator, enter the rate from your bill and adjust the daily hours. Standing charges are excluded because they are charged separately from appliance use.
