Compare brightness as well as watts
Watts describe power consumption, not brightness. When comparing replacements, look at lumens, light colour, beam angle and compatibility with the fitting and controls. The calculator does not establish whether a particular lamp is a suitable replacement.
A worked savings example
Ten 50 W lamps used for four hours a day consume 730 kWh a year. Ten 5 W LEDs used for the same hours consume 73 kWh. At an example 25p per kWh, the difference is £164.25 a year. Your result depends on actual usage and tariff.
Allow for the complete upgrade cost
For a £100 total upgrade and £164.25 annual saving, simple payback is about 0.61 years, roughly seven months. Include any fittings, controls and installation work in the cost. This simple estimate excludes finance, maintenance and future tariff changes.
Plan the installation
Some installations need more than replacement bulbs. Tell us about the current fittings and dimmers and the effect you want before buying parts. Our lighting service covers enquiries for interior, exterior and feature lighting.
